Sweat + Skincare

Posted on January 02 2018

Here at PRETTY ATHLETIC we love living our best, most healthy and active life but we know that this can have an impact on how our skin looks and feels. Heading straight from a favourite lunchtime spin class back to our desk does wonders for our fun and fitness levels, but can wreak havoc on our skin if we don't cleanse properly before and after a workout.
.
The good news is that sweating is good for your skin and there are studies that show the act of sweating removes impurities, opens your pores and releases the grit and grime that has built up inside of them. The bad news is that letting sweat sit on your skin for any prolonged length of time can lead to bacteria from the sweat settling in to your skin leading to issues such as breakouts, milia, rashes and more.
.
Our research shows that over 50% of women don't cleanse their face after exercise, despite the fact that experts recommend cleansing both before and after you sweat.
.
.
They key is to start your workout with clean skin, particularly if you are wearing make-up, so remove all traces with a multi-tasking product such as our Workout Glow to remove all traces so you start your sweat with a clean, hydrated face.
.
Afterwards, cleanse again to remove sweat, and also any bacteria that you may have transferred from gym machines or yoga mats onto your face. It's important to use a gentle cleanser that doesn't strip the skin of its natural oils or irritate skin which is already likely to be red and sensitive. You might then want to apply and soothing and cooling mist to help calm down your skin.
.
If you can, give your skin a little time to return to its natural temperature before you apply any product or makeup. We recommend applying a lightweight, antioxidant rich moisturiser with soothing botanical actives.
